Why don’t you encourage them in performing both? Words are actions, in many cases. Putting out a statement of belief such as this isn’t simple. I would hope they are also doing stuff items to make the lives of the black employees better but that doesn’t mean I want to treat this as meaningless. Putting out a public announcement is really a great step forwards for initiatives such as that, because if EA isn’t doing enough then it is really easy for people internally to say”Look, our activities are materially distinct from our stated principles and we ought to do something about this” At the end of the day should you refuse to acknowledge when a business creates a little step you love then how do they ever learn to make a big step you love? You are treating this like a political discussion in which earning this little concession means you won’t have the bargaining power to earn a bigger one in the future. But I really don’t think that’s how this works: EA is testing the waters and learning from their clients whether this is the type of thing they encourage or not. Is your lesson you would like them to understand from all that human decency is not worth appealing to because it doesn’t actually affect buying decisions?
I believe based on your comment that we are likely to essentially disagree on idealism vs. realism, and that is okay. I find myself usually in the center of realism and idealism because I understand the way the world works but I want a better world; you do not have to select one or another. I really don’t understand why we have to provide corporations a pass simply as they aren’t individuals (that Citizens United would disagree with but that’s another argument.) We shouldn’t just accept the best we are given by a company, we ought to anticipate the best we need from these. Companies are made of people calling the shots and you will find an infinite amount of examples of companies that both make enormous profits and endure for great causes. Patagonia is a great example. They do not need to make sustainable products and supply repair and reuse programs to go against fast trend, but they do and they earn a lot of money .
“Everybody should do the right thing” is only naive if you do nothing about it. This instance does not include the many grey topics where opinions have a location; this is actually a discussion of if you want black people to have rights or not. It isn’t brave of a company to say that black people deserve rights simply because they’ll lose white supremacist customers. It really IS very simple for a company to set out a statement of belief like this, as we have seen from each the businesses doing this right now like Amazon and the NFL. I really don’t understand how it’s difficult for a multi-million dollar business to give up a very small fraction of the gains for the greater good. If people who do not like Black Lives Issue make up a Vast Majority of a Organization’s customerbase, then perhaps they shouldn’t have those gains (not asserting EA’s playerbase in against BLM, this mut coins madden 21 really is a hyperbolized example)
